Westwood had a strong showing at the Class 6A Region II tournament in Waco.

The Warriors qualified for two divisions at the Class 6A state tennis tournament in College Station, May 17-18. It's the first time in 18 years that Westwood has qualified for more than two events, according to coach Travis Dalrymple.

Gaurav Singh placed second in boy's singles and the tandem of Sofie Kardonik and Michelle Duan finished second in girls doublesto qualify for the state meet.

The Warriors' mixed doubles pair of Leonard Wang and Kiana Graham placed third, earning an alternate slot. Girl's singles player Jessie Liu finished fourth.

"I was very proud of our kids, because they worked really hard over the past several weeks," Dalrymple said. "We have the toughest region in the state, and to just get out of region is amazing."

Kardonik and Duan also had to battle the wave of storms that rolled through Waco April 20-21, which forced the regional tournament to move from the outdoor courts at the Waco Regional Tennis and Fitness Center to the indoor courts at Baylor University.

The Westwood duo then beat a stout team from The Woodlands in a playback match to advance.

"Sofie and Michelle played the best match they have ever played in perhaps the biggest match of their lives," Dalrymple said.

Plenty of area tennis programs will join Westwood at state.
