Westwood's Wang paces Central Texas Class 6A swimmers at boys state meet with gold, silver

SAN ANTONIO — Westwood sophomore Sonny Wang paced Central Texas swimmers with a gold and a silver in Class 6A freestyle races Friday at the UIL Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Wang shared the gold with San Antonio Reagan's Luke Prior in the 50-meter freestyle as they recorded matching 20.56-second times at Josh Davis Natatorium.

Wang and Clear Falls' Seth Reno were neck-and-neck in the 100 freestyle, with Reno touching in a pool-record 44.21 and Wang right behind him at 44.38.

"It feels great, but I have to dedicate a lot of my achievements to my team," Wang said. "They just support me through everything. Right before my race, they come up to me as a group and motivate me."

The Woodlands claimed the Class 6A team state championship with 229 points. Kingwood was a close second at 227 points, with Cypress Woods third at 173.

Wang and teammates Dillon Shadowen, Benjamin Truong and Grady Radclifff placed 14th in the 200 medley relay. Wang joined Truong, Max Vinnik and Dan Vinnik for a ninth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.

Vista Ridge's Mauricio Posadas narrowly missed a podium spot with a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.81.

Westlake's Daniel Li took seventh in the 100 backstroke with a 50.79.

Other area top finishers were Lake Travis' Kyle Valdez (12th) in the 200 individual medley and Vista Ridge's Kelson Flynn (14th) in the 200 freestyle.

The Vista Ridge team of Keegan Allen, Ethan Brissenden, Cameron Zapalac and Kelson Flynn picked up a 13th-place finish in the 200 free relay.

Vandegrift's 400-freestyle relay team of Daniel Bishop, Aidan Spaulding, Joshua Bedford and Julian Young placed 14th.

Bowie sophomore Alekzandr Popper and Vista Ridge senior Ty Wamsley participated in the diving competition. Popper finished eighth with a score of 454.60, and Wamsley placed 15th at 303.85.
